Castration for sex offenders

with 14 comments

“More countries in Europe are considering mandating or allowing chemical castration for violent sex offenders. There is intense debate over whose rights take precedence: those of violent sex offenders, who could be subjected to a punishment that many consider cruel, or those of society, which expects protection from sexual predators.” – The International Herald Tribune.

From Time: “A doctor makes an incision in a man’s scrotal sac and, deftly wielding his scalpel, quickly removes both testicles. In the Czech Republic, that simple operation is the punishment for male sex offenders. But to the Council of Europe, the region’s leading human-rights body, the procedure is ‘invasive, irreversible and mutilating.’ In a report issued last week, the council called the punishment ‘degrading’ and demanded it be scrapped immediately.”

  1. hell yeah – bring it on!
Is voluntary castration legal yet? I’ve heard about sex offenders requesting to be castrated but it being refused – that seems crazy.
I’d suggest a “three strikes and cut” policy to avoid unjust castrations (how bad would that be??), but I can’t think of a reason why this shouldn’t be policy.
I’ve also heard of ex offenders who have been castrated being able to live normal lives as their sick desire had gone.

  2. i do agree with this in principle; however, i’d have to have more trust in our legal system before i would put this into practice.

Jack – “three strikes and cut”; so you’d wait for three lives to be ruined before you did anything about it? this is also assuming that all three consecutive sexual offences by this offender are reported, brought to trial and him accused.

  3. woah – its unlikely we’d go from a slap on the wrist and a couple of years (like we have now) to immediate castration of single offenders.
Not saying I wouldn’t be for it…but I really don’t wanna be cutting off the bollocks of the innocent.

  4. It is the irreversibleness that seems to be a problem with the Czech method. I wonder whether a reversible chemical method would be viable? Don’t know enough about this (strangely enough) but while googling options (sorry Gipper), I stumbled across an interesting site for eunuch’s offering advice on methods to join their club –
“If we lived in a perfect world, we would just go to our doctor and tell him we wanted our testicles removed. It shouldn’t be any bigger deal than a vasectomy. But that’s not the way it is. Our society considers that any man who wants to remove his testicles, must be crazy.”

  5. Castration for all sex offenders should be compulsory.
    No 3 strikes.
And the surgeon should not be deft with the scalpel but clumsy and blind.
If the courts get it wrong occasionaly, thats fine with me.

Then I would sterilise any male relatives of the sex offender.

I would then sterilise all the chavs because they are really getting on my nerves, and their breeding is totally out of control.

  7. Maybe the government should employ eunuchs, as part of their rehabilitation strategy, to convey the relative merits of voluntary castration to sex-offenders (and chavs)? Historically, eunuchs have often played powerful roles in the legal systems of ancient empires. They could even be deployed to help tackle the breeding issues that concern Full English.

There is a choice to the seedless solution…After more research I have discovered that temporary chemical castration is already used elsewhere – offenders can be given regular injections of leuproreline, a prostate cancer drug, or Depo-Provera, which inhibit testosterone production.

  8. Castration yes, Depo Provera no. Female contraceptive injection???

  10. I wouldn’t sterilise the poor in india, we need someone to clean out the toilets of the burgeoning middle classes.

  11. Fisrt time offense – option of castration & earlier release.
The innocent can refuse and are no worse off.

Second offence if you refuse castration – you die.
Offend after castration – you die.

    Simple as…

  14. Don’t want to be a kill-joy here but do we need to distinguish between different types of sex-offence before agreeing these measures? Or does the proposed punishment apply across the board to all types: Rape
Assault by penetration; Sexual Assault; Causing sexual activity without consent..?
