Excuses… Excuses

Could someone please explain to me why England is so fucking good at doing badly at sports that we invented and then making pathetic excuses for it. I once read someone comment on the fact that we only talk about the past and I concur! On the rare occasion one of our teams pulls something out of the bag we use this as evidence as some kind of greatness for a number of years. Who are we trying to kid? Ourselves quite clearly. Why don’t we use all this pent up energy on actually practicing a sport before trying it out in a serious match situation. Jack Dee once said that if whinging was an Olympic sport we would get gold everytime! I am certainly not dissing the fact that we keep on trying but for god sake stop hyping it up so much before capitulating back into our usual mediocracy.

  1. To be honest I think its the other way round – we’re fucking amazing for a tiny island.
Problem is the attitude you’ve just put forward – we love to knock ourselves and even when we are good the media/public still feel we need to bring our heroes down off their pedestals.
    You should be a journo.

  3. er OK! As I said, become a journalist – its much easier to judge sporting prowess than exhibit it…
Think Henman, Monty, Gazza, in fact, every team/individual we have…the sporting failures of the general public sit in their fat armchairs and have the cheek to criticise our heroes rather than get behind them.
Your attitude is not new – it is what gets written in every paper every day.
    Don’t believe the hype.

  5. good point unique forms. I think this plays more in football than in anything else. Henman was more a case of optimism but with football it goes further like we are owed because we invented it. Rugby and cricket and even athletics have shown our people can rise to the international challenge and perform but our beloved (rich as fuck) footballers score a big zero. I think it’s sometimes better to accept there is a problem and fix it than just continue with our heads up our arses as Igotlife suggests. Knocking our footballers has merit because on the international front they are crap. Having a go at everything English is just as idiotic to me as I have to agree, in some sports, we are damn good!
